Georgian Bay Today
If anyone had asked me recently about my career, I would have answered that I have evolved from high school teaching to my more personally expressive pursuits of writing, painting, and photography. If you ask me today, I need to add the word ‘publisher’ to the list; publisher of a regional quarterly 16 page tabloid aka Georgian Bay Today, this in response to the retirement of the venerable Al Heisey publisher of 103 editions of the paper over more than 25 years.
I find myself therefore following the path blazed by “Hize” as he prefers to be called and anticipate filling his large shoes. Al has a vast knowledge from a wealth of experience from which I hope to draw inspiration and direction. He has prided himself over the years with the mission of growing publishers – so here I am, growing.
Georgian Bay Today has always been about recreation, life style, nature and about our shared passion for Georgian Bay. It is also about the culture of reading. It is at the intersection of these cultures that Georgian Bay Today lives. It has an established presence cultivated over 25 years – a good foundation and tradition. At the risk of sounding naïve, I consider several challenges, to enhance the appeal of GBT. 1. Update the graphics, 2. Enliven the content, 3. Increase the circulation, 4. Create a GBT team, 5. Create a web presence.
I experience the ‘Bay’ paddling a canoe, sailing a small yacht, riding a bicycle, skiing the trails, seeing through my binoculars, creating with my camera writing about the bird life, painting the landscape and living in my permanent home with a view of the Bay at Wasaga Beach all of which I share with my partner, right hand and love Sherry Giddings, our editor in waiting. We could not possibly be happier than to have this opportunity to meet the people of our community and give voice to their stories in Georgian Bay Today.
